We encourage you to follow the steps below, and please contact us if you need more information about how to apply.
Step 1: Magnet Presentations to 8th Grade Students
September 14-15, 2016
Your child will get to hear presentations from the 3 magnet programs at their school
Step 2: Come to the DCSD Magnet Fair
September 22, 2016
Come on out to the magnet fair and learn about each of the magnet programs. Bring your child who is applying and spend time talking to a representative from each of the schools to figure out which is the best choice for your child. That said, it is important to apply to all three programs. That way if your child is accepted to all three, you can choose which one your child wishes to attend.
Step 3: Apply
September 22-October 14, 2016
You will receive application information at the Magnet Fair. If you did not get the opportunity to attend the Magnet Fair, you may pick up applications to the magnet schools from your child’s school. Send in your applications before 4:30 on October 14th. Applications are based on (not in any particular order):
- Teacher recommendations
- Behavior record
- Writing sample
* Magnet eligibility letters will then be mailed December 16, 2016.
Step 4: Interviews
January 24 & 25, 2017
Each magnet program sets up dates and times for students be interviewed by the school to ensure that each child is a good match for the program. After students have submitted their application, the district office sends a letter advising students if they are eligible for an interview. At that time students must call the school and schedule an appointment. Please the school's main office to schedule an interview appointment.
Step 5: Wait for Acceptance Letter and Choose Your Program
March 2, 2017
You will receive a letter from the district letting you know which program(s) your child was accepted. Please follow any instructions in the letter with regard to notifying schools or your desire to attend. If you were not accepted to any of the programs to which you applied, you may appeal the decision with the district.
Step 6: Submit your Confirmation
March 16, 2017
Once your child has received an acceptance letter to the Early College Honors Program at DHS, you need to return your confirmation letter by the March 16th deadline. Failure to submit your confirmation will result in your child NOT being in the program, being ineligible to take dual credit college courses, and needing to apply again next year.
