What is Title I?

Title I is a federal program that provides extra funding to public schools with higher percentages of low-income families. Its main goal is to ensure all children receive a high-quality education and meet state academic goals.

How Schools Use Title I Funds

Districts send these funds directly to the schools that need them most. Depending on the school, funds are used in one of two ways:

• Schoolwide Support: If at least 40% of students come from low-income families, the school can combine Title I money with other funds to improve its entire educational program. This helps boost learning for every student, with a special focus on those who need extra help.

• Targeted Support: Schools with fewer low-income students create specific, customized learning programs to help individual students who need extra academic assistance.

Key Promises to Families

• Proven Teaching Methods: All Title I programs must use teaching practices backed by educational research.

• Parent Involvement: Schools must actively partner with parents and families in their children's education.

• Support for Private School Students: Districts must also provide equal, extra academic services to eligible students attending local private schools, as well as support for their parents and teachers.
